Castrol Achieves Electrical Energy Saving In Auto Mill Geardrives

The solution reduced electrical consumption on two 4 mg auto mills with the resultant saving of ZAR3,12 m in direct electrical cost. The saving in electricity is enough to power 250 homes for one year.

Application

The lubricant  in the two gear drives per mill have been replaced by a PAO – Castrol Synthetic PD with the view of reducing the electrical energy consumed.

Identify

By working collaboratively with Infinite Energy (Third party M&V specialist.) and the customer  two 4 MG Auto Mills were identified to evaluate the lubricant’s effectiveness in reducing the energy consumed, by replacing the lubricant in all four gear drives and measuring the baseline demand prior and subsequent to the change.

Agree

It was agreed to use a high performance lubricant Castrol Optigear Synthetic PD – a PAO lubricant with PD additive technology. The advanced  technology in the additive package were designed to improve friction coefficient thus  reducing friction leading to energy saving and extended component life.

Deliver

The measured electrical demand reduced substantially in both mills and the M&V team could verify a saving of R260k per month based on the results subsequent to the product change over. Wear particle analysis on the units indicate better than before protection on the gear units as well.
