Oil analysis monitors lubricant condition, contamination and equipment wear. It can identify wear metals, viscosity changes, water ingress, contamination and additive depletion before problems become major failures. The supplied LPR guidance recommends sampling most industrial equipment every 500 operating hours or monthly, whichever comes first, with more frequent sampling for critical mining haul trucks, gearboxes and hydraulic systems.  Set up an oil sampling programme.

Warning signs can include increased operating temperatures, unusual equipment noise, discoloured or contaminated oil, excessive wear particles, water contamination, oxidation or deteriorating equipment performance. Oil analysis and trend monitoring provide a more reliable basis for determining lubricant condition and replacement requirements than visual inspection alone.

Dust, water, wear metals and other contaminants can accelerate abrasive wear, reduce lubricant film strength and promote oxidation and corrosion. The supplied LPR material notes that contamination is a major contributor to hydraulic and gearbox failures and that particles as small as 4 microns can cause damage in sensitive components. LPR supports contamination control through desiccant breathers, offline filtration, controlled transfer equipment, magnetic filtration and ISO 4406 cleanliness monitoring through oil analysis.
